What Young Women Take for Granted

By Hillary Taft - Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

One of the most distressing things about this election for me personally is to see how many young women completely disrespected Hillary Clinton and are now disrespecting Sarah Palin. They seem to be perfectly OK voting for the black guy as an answer to racism, but they can’t seem to get the idea of supporting women in positions of power. Today I read an amazing comment on No Quarter that I must share:

In 1970 I was 19 years old , and the youngest “STEWARDESS” at my new airline job.

We were called Stewardess’s then..it would be 3 more years Until we offically became “FLIGHT ATTENDANTS”

We could not be married, we could definitely not be pregnant..and we definitely were sex objects all airlines used to get customers.

We had to weigh in before each and every trip when we signed in for work.

We had to have our nails checked and our uniform checked..as well as hair was evaluated.

Heck I had heavy eyebrows..the “grooming division” from my airline peeled completely off with chemicals! completely off.

I went through many uniforms in 33 years..there were the Mini Skirt dresses..the white go- go boots, the hot pants..and finally professional uniforms that today represent the professionals that put their lives on the line every day .. to save yours.

Many work conditions, and fiancial battles and even safety proceedures were fought for by women before these obamabots..

Imagine these obamabots being told they had to resign work if they got married???????

There were brave women who fought for Unions to protect their sisters and brothers at work..

I remember sitting on a bus during a pilot strike and the airline threatening our jobs if we did not stay on that bus and cross the pilots strike line..all of us women got off that bus and refused to cross the pilots line..too bad they never did that for us!!

We became “flight attendants ” when my airline bought a carrib airline that had male flight cabin crew..and they called them flight attendants and us still stewardesses..until we consolidated the name for all of us..

We fought for the gals who had to quit because they got married so they could get their jobs back..and not be discriminated against…and they got a big payout of back pay.

We fought with our union that passengers would not be able to touch us..sounds simple right..but it wasn’t..I remember doing a o2 oxygen demo and more than once ..men grabbing our crotches..( yes it happened to me..) ahh those were the mini dress period..we were COFFE, TEA OR ME generation..

I got in trouble putting little shorts under my mini dress so I would not be exposed when doing the O2 oxygen demo..thank goodness for my fellow flight sisters and our New Union..I did not lose my job..for that infraction.

There were many times through my years flying that we gave up pay increases for safety..safety for us and safety for our passengers.

I remember being on a flight that had to make a serious emergency landing..It was very trying to say the least..we had many hours on duty when we had to fill out documents for the FAA and the Airline and answer questions by everyone involved in the safety aspect.
The pilots were released to go home, we however had to continue to work, and had to fly a full load of passengers to San Fran..from Dallas..see no consideration was taken to our mental state after an emergency…until we fought for those rights…

There are many aspects of you getting on a flight today , that you are safer than ever because of the flight crews of women and men who fought for your right to be safe , as well as their own.

Today the people who go to work on a tube that goes in the air..are treated as the professionals they are, with government protections so they stay safe ..so they can keep you safe..because of the hard fighting women who fought for that safety.

And I sit here right now befuddled, that young women today don’t realize that others before them fought for the very rights they take for granted.

I remember having to walk down a staircase at flight school.. with a book on my head with little white gloves on and having to make it down that staircase without the book falling.

These Obamabot young women have no idea what they are giving up when they take for granted how far we have come and they have no idea how far they have yet to go.

It makes me sad..and I was only one of the so many women who fought to make life easier for them..and the so many women who fought before me.

The difference was..I respected those who came before me..and the sacrifices they made for me..these young ones only respect the newest toy they can get.

I have a road map of veins on my legs because we had to get up and serve an entire aircraft of passengers..full meals ..with no carts then..we hand carried everything..with the pressure of the accent of the aircraft on our legs..and bodies..

Today the cabin crew does not get up and sacrifice their bodies , and safety..until the aircraft is leveled off..

I think sometimes..maybe these young ones have to lose what we accomplished ..in order to “get it”..or even attempt to understand the gift they have been given…by so many who have sacrificed for them to take their rights for granted.

I salute those brave women who I worked with that lost their jobs fighting for what was right and for everyone’s safety…and for those brave women who came before me , and gave me the courage to fight for equality in the work place ..and the incredible gift they gave many of us to fight for our self worth and self respect.

And to all the women here..RIGHT HERE.. who fight each and every day ..in your own work placefor “WHAT IS RIGHT”

FOR TRUTH..FOR DEMOCRACY, FOR EQUALITY, FOR OTHER WOMEN TO ACHIEVE THE HIGHEST PLATFORM WE ARE VERY CAPABLE OF.

I AM DISGUSTED BY THE WOMEN WHO WOULD ATTEMPT TO KEEP ANY OF US DOWN..WHEN THEY BOAST THEIR OWN SUCCESS!

I will be voting for a republican for the first time in my life in November..

I will proudly vote, McCain/Palin

And I cheer on Sarah and hope and pray she does break through that ceiling.

WE the other part of that ‘WE THE PEOPLE”

HAVE WAITED LONG ENOUGH AND ENDURED ENTIRELY ENOUGH ..FROM THOSE WHO ATTEMPT TO KEEP US DOWN!

AND TO THE MEDIA IN THIS NATION..FUCK OFF!

Wow, what a great post! I hear this call to stand from women everywhere. Uppity Woman takes a similar stand on her blog. I’m a lifelong Democrat who is delighted by Sarah Palin…there, I said it. I think she’s a strong go-getter and I understand her. Whenever I see a woman rise to any position of power or prestige, I understand the road she had to travel to get there. I had to travel that road, too, and it’s not always a pretty one.

I can’t wait to begin the reform of the Democratic Party after McCain wins in November. Time to clean house, ladies! And we know how to do it!

Hi. I am a 30 year old born and raised Republican, for ill or good. Sadly, it hasn’t been but until the past few election cycles that I paid attention, got involved and voiced my opinion. I have to say, first with Hillary and now with Palin, the grotesque, immoral, vile, debased comments by political standard-bearers on both sides of the aisle has been ALARMING. Have I not paid attention before? Did I not know that sexism was still alive and well? Last year I gave birth to a daughter and this year we have another woman on the ticket and, for the first time, I felt truly empowered! Seriously, I had all sorts of old dreams pop back up in my head…owning a business, becoming a professor, writing books, running a charity, auditioning for local theater, etc. Sarah Palin, to me, represents every woman…a little of all of us. Like her or not, weak she isn’t…but the debased comments toward her GOING UNCHECKED is unreal.

Whether people “neuter” Hillary or pornify Palin, something is horribly wrong. You know, I was raped once…and that feeling of violation is unmistakable. Funny thing is, during this election cycle, I’m wondering why I am feeling that emotion again?

Thank you for your presence online and out there. :o )
